Abstract: The study aims to clarify the seed germination characteristics of eleven introduced gramineae forage grasses in agro-pastoral ecotone of northern Shaanxi, and to provide a theoretical basis for the selection and evaluation of high quality forage grasses in this area. The results showed that there were significant differences in seed germination of different gramineae forage grasses, the field germination percentage, indoor germination percentage, germinative force, germination index and vitality index of Sorghum hybrid sudangras were significantly higher than those of other species, but Elymus dahuricus showed the opposite trends. The fresh weight, root length, shoot length and root shoot ratio of S. sudanense young seedlings were significantly higher than those of other young seedlings. For different forage grasses, the indoor germination percentage, germinative force, germination index, vitality index, fresh weight and root length were positively correlated with the shoot length. According to the membership function analysis, the top three species were S. sudanense, S. hybrid sudangras and Lolium perenne. These results suggested that S. sudanense, S. hybrid sudangras and L. perenne were more suitable for planting in agro-pastoral ecotone of northern Shaanxi.
