Abstract:

This article reviewed and analyzed the current state and major characteristics of Fujian’s county economic development since the Tenth Five-Year Plan. It suggested that Fujian’s county economy has entered a new developmental stage since Fujian provincial government proposed to construct the economic zone on the west side of the Taiwan Straits in 2004, which has become one of China’s main regional development strategies. The contribution of Fujian’s county economy to provincial economy was increasing year by year, and county economy has become an important support for provincial economic growth. However, comparing with other provinces in the eastern region such as Guangdong and Zhejiang, Fujian was still lagging far behind in the scale and competitiveness of county economy. This article pointed out several problems of Fujian’s county economic development, such as the weak foundation for growth, small scale of economy, unbalanced distribution, and the limited ability to gather market resources at the county level. More importantly, this article proposed several countermeasures, including further strengthening and expanding leading industries and specialty industries, advancing private economy, promoting system innovation, and improving counties’ inner growing force.
