Abstract:

Paclobutrazol with the concentrations 150, 300, 600, 1200 mg/L were applied on ‘Jingu 21’ and ‘Zhangza 5’ in the seedling stage to study the effects on development and physiological properties of foxtail millet, with distilled water as control. The randomized blocks design was adopted. The results showed that spraying leaves with paclobutrazol could significantly improve the content of chlorophyll, soluble protein and soluble sugar. The SOD activity, POD activity and NR activity were significantly enhanced, but the plant height and MDA content were reduced. Compared with the control, on August 21 st, spraying leaves with 300 mg/L, the plant height decreased by 4.75% and 11.75%, the chlorophyll content increased by 41.8% and 32.5%, the SOD activity increased by 11.5% and 13.9%, the POD activity increased by 37.4% and 25.9%, the MDA content decreased by 21.8% and 16.8%, the NR activity increased by 13.56% and 16.18%, the soluble protein content increased by 3.97% and 5.37%, the soluble sugar content increased by 30.8% and 24.2%, respectively. Therefore, the optimum paclobutrazol concentration for controlling the growth of foxtail millet is 300 mg/L.
