Abstract: Leaf thickness is an important factor of leaf morphology and index of plant type improvement, and has attracted much attention in the research of rice ideal plant type and high-yield breeding. Recently, a great deal of studies on rice thickness has been carried out using SLW or SLA as evaluation index. This review, therefore, aims to summarize the role of leaf thickness in plant type building, photosynthesis and yield formation, as well as the progress of genetic analysis and QTL mapping, for the purpose to provide reference for the further research. Furthermore, current problems of measurement and evaluation of leaf thickness are analyzed, and the application of nondestructive leaf thickness instrument is discussed.
